Education, Research and Innovation in Switzerland

Universities of teacher education

Universities of teacher education fall within the remit of the cantons and are subject to cantonal and inter-cantonal regulation. In addition to teaching, research and development, universities of teacher education offer continuing education and training courses and supplementary training.

Graduates of universities of teacher education receive both a basic academic title (Bachelor, Master) and a professional qualification, which is either a teaching qualification for a given stage of education or a professional qualification in special needs teaching. These professional qualifications and teaching qualifications (pre-school, primary, lower secondary, upper secondary) issued or recognised by the cantons can be given national recognition by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK). This recognition gives the holder the right to teach in the relevant school type anywhere in Switzerland. All pre-school and primary teaching qualifications are automatically recognised by the EDK, which ensures national and international mobility for teaching staff.

There are currently 14 legally independent cantonal or inter-cantonal universities of teacher education in Switzerland. There are also two universities of teacher education which form part of universities of applied sciences.
