Some interesting facts about Nomos Glashütte
You might have recognized that I did not publish an interview with either Roland Schwertner, the founder of Nomos Glashütte in 1990, nor with Uwe Ahrendt, the CEO of the watchmaking company. It does not fail according to my will, but due to the fact that Roland Schwertner does not give any taped interviews at all and Uwe Ahrendt prefers to do them in German I simply couldn’t. As I know that Nomos Glashütte is popular among you guys I want to serve you some written facts in a kind of Q&A I put together for you…    

Facts about Nomos Glashütte … 

Nomos Glashütte was founded in 1990 by Roland Schwertner. He still plays an active role today as head of sales.
Judith Borowski is responsible for branding, while Uwe Ahrendt is the CEO of the watchmaking company. Together, they make up the senior management.
 
Nomos Glashütte is owner-operated and not part of any conglomerate. Nomos Glashütte has a staff of 300 employees. The vast majority of them, around 260, work in the heritage-rich town of Glashütte where wristwatches of the very best quality are produced. Around 40 employees work for the subsidiaries Nomos Glashuette USA in New York and the in-house creative agency Berlinerblau in Berlin. 
 
Is Nomos manufacturing its own calibres?
 
Nomos Glashütte produces all ten of its calibers by itself in Glashütte. The finest mechanical watches have been built in this town for over 170 years and the “Glashütte” designation of origin can only be used when at least 50 percent of a caliber’s value is generated there. At Nomos Glashütte, however, the production depth is up to 95 percent which is exceptional in the watchmaking industry. Thus, Nomos Glashütte can ascertain the quality of its calibers. The company’s in-house research and development department can take credit for several patents, such as the date mechanism and power reserve indicator.
  
In 2014 and in cooperation with the technical university TU Dresden, Nomos Glashütte developed a proprietary escapement, the Nomos Swing System.
  
The project took seven years of research and nearly 12 million euros in investment; the result is technological independence for the watchmaking company, and the opportunity to equip watches with this essential part without relying on external know-how. Only a few firms globally are able to produce this pacesetting part of a mechanical caliber. Now, nearly all of the company’s movements have been equipped with the Nomos swing system.
The latest innovation on the market, the new automatic caliber DUW 3001, is also fitted with this proprietary escapement.
 
This movement ticks in the neomatik series and is setting new standards: At only 3.2 millimeters in height, it is exceptionally thin thinner than almost anything else in the watchmaking world that self-winds and is produced in series.
 
At the same time, this motor is extremely accurate; a combination that is unique in the industry. With this automatic caliber the watchmaking company, which until now has been primarily known for hand-wound timepieces, has been able to enter a new market segment.
 
The abbreviation DUW stands for “Nomos Glashütte Deutsche Uhrenwerke” and promises the very highest quality, Made in Germany. While Nomos Glashütte has been producing all its calibers in-house since 2005, the label DUW makes the watchmaking company’s credentials as a caliber producer clear. A movement that carries this name has been handmade according to the rules of traditional craftsmanship in Glashütte, with great care and attention to detail. 
 
Is the design of Nomos watches done in-house? 
 
Nomos watches are produced in the tradition of the Deutscher Werkbund, since Nomos Glashütte is a member of this association which in turn led to the Bauhaus and Ulm schools. That is why the company’s design principles are based on the idea of combining timeless design with outstanding craftsmanship and long-lasting quality. At Nomos Glashütte, outstanding watchmaking comes together with refined German industrial design and a dash of Berlin; a combination which is unique in the world of fine watches. 
 
What about the Nomos collection? 
There is something to celebrate at Nomos Glashütte: This year is a significant anniversary of its classic watch designs. The Tangente, Orion, Tetra, and Ludwig models continue to be the collection’s foundations.
 
In 2017, all together, they will be 100 years old!
The entire collection from Nomos Glashütte consists of twelve model families with almost 100 watch versions; mechanical timepieces with stainless steel cases in the price range of 1,000 to 5,000 Euros.
In 2015, Nomos Glashütte introduced a series of ultra-thin, highly precise automatic watches onto the market neomatik.
 
And 2017 brings the series Campus and Aqua: With watches for students and elegant water-resistant time-pieces, Nomos Glashütte is attracting the next generation of watch wearers.
 
The two haute horlogerie models in 18-carat rose or white gold, Lambda and Lux, are the icing on the cake at Nomos Glashütte. They cost between 12,800 and 15,800 Euro. Only a few of these timepieces are crafted a week.
 
Whether in gold or in stainless steel all timepieces from Nomos Glashütte represent outstanding watchmaking craft, top quality materials, modern design, and excellent value-for-money; they are luxury watches that remain accessibly priced. 
 
Money Makes the World Go ‘Round
 
Counter to the industry trend, the demand for Nomos watches is growing constantly; last year it was by a further 24 percent.
 
Today, the watchmaking company is by far the largest producer in Germany no other brand makes more mechanical watches than Nomos Glashütte.
In the price range of 1,000 to 5,000 Euro, Nomos Glashütte is also the domestic market leader in mechanical watch sales. 
  
The company is experiencing steadily growing demand internationally. Nomos Glashütte, which exports to over 50 countries worldwide, is currently concentrating on rapidly expanding its US business; the United States has become the second largest market for the watchmaking company. In 2016, Nomos Glashütte also enjoyed strong growth in the Asian markets and in Great Britain. Estimated turnover 60 – 70 million Euro.
